Literary Craft Remains Fairly Constant
I studied with Sol Stein for a long time. He was a masterful teacher though I was not enamored as some of his proteges were but not all writers are alike. My ear for dialogue, honed young and developed during my tenure practicing and teaching in mental health, usually begins my stories. The novel I’m pitching now, SweetSpot, features a southern woman as the protagonist. I heard Darlene’s voice early on and it was southern, even tried to reroot her to the midwest in a later draft but by then, her voice wouldn’t let me. Most all I know about dialogue and how it’s obliqueness is the goal I learned from studying with Sol Stein.
